inspiration all around us

By Marykathleen

Inspired by a cop picked hazel.

‘Coppicing is the earliest known form of woodland management. It is a method of cutting broadleaved trees down to the ground at regular intervals. A cluster of new shoots sprout up from the stump (stool) and these eventually provide new manageable straight poles. In the UK, hazel is the tree most commonly coppiced’.
I was so chuffed to identify this example. Now I want to know, when was it first coppiced and is it a sign of an ancient hedge?
