La plaza
Too hot and humid all day for walking anywhere, so here again is la Plaza del Emigrante with the notice-tree. The thumbnail shows a poster advertising the forthcoming celebrations of the arrival of Charles V, the Hapsburg emperor, who then became Carlos 1 of Spain. His navigator was supposed to bring him in to Santander but missed and landed in Tazones instead. Tazones was immediately dismissed as unworthy of the honour, probably by one of the two ducal families resident in nearby Villaviciosa, and Carlos was hosted instead in the house of the dukes of Hevia in Villaviciosa. The very scenic, but not smooth, walking route between the two towns is now an official tourist hiking route. How far Carlos actually walked, rather than was carried, is not recorded. But the event is celebrated both in Tazones and Villaviciosa.
In the extra, for no very good reason except that it´s on the same plaza, is shown a pavilion much favoured by what I think are martins.
