Kirkcudbright Bay

Today's the day ..................... for a Dig with a view

So good to be back 'digging ' again with the gang - on a new site on the shore of Kirkcudbright Bay, where there is a possibility that there was once a medieval Nunnery located somewhere nearby .

The aim of the work is firstly to locate foundations to confirm the existence of two probably late 18th cottages, as shown on an existing Estate Plan. Secondly, to look for any medieval finds indicative of medieval occupation of the site. There are three (probable later medieval) architectural fragments, built into the wall which fronts the site.  It has been suggested previously that it could be the location of St. Evoca's Cistercian Nunnery.

So we started today, preparing the four trial pits (see extra) that hopefully will give some indication of what might have been going on in the past.  It's all very exciting and we will have six weeks or so to investigate.  But, even if we find nothing conclusive, it's a beautiful place to spend time - and as you can see from the above, the view from the site isn't bad either .........................!
