South Fork Nooksack - Cavanaugh Reach Restoration
One of the best parts of my job is seeing projects we've been involved with "in the ground" and today was no exception. Through the Lummi Nation I had the opportunity to help restore habitat conditions within the Upper South Fork Nooksack and construct 6 engineered logjams and 9 large wood placements in a side channel.
The project was constructed in the fall of 2012 and so far has experienced one high flow season. Constructed ELJs are functioning great so far having racked up a lot of additional wood through the winter, created pool habitat, and increased flow into an exiting side channel buy ~50%. All in all pretty good so far and only time will tell how the river continues to respond.
