Polychromatic

The tiny Long-legged flies, Dolichopodidae,  are everywhere! Wikipedia describes them as 'a large cosmopolitan family of true flies with more than 7,000 described species in about 230 genera'. They are very beneficial to gardeners because they feed on 'a variety of small, soft-bodied arthropods, including other flies, thrips, aphids, spider mites, small caterpillars and even termites'. We have iridescent green, red and blue ones. My current favorites are the multi-colored or 'polychromatic' ones, like the photo above. Of late I've been seeing some really striking golden-colored ones which I'm still trying to get a good shot of. So watch this space!
