A good morning at the day job followed by a good afternoon with an old friend, meandering around the Fringe and soaking up the atmosphere.

And then an evening at Portobello Book Shop with BBC Radio 4’s Book Club. James Naughtie led a discussion with Denise Mina about The Long Drop. It was meant to be Jenni Fagan talking about Luckenbooth, but unfortunately there was a family bereavement and she couldn’t make it.

I loved Luckenbooth and had beef really looking forward to it, but Denise Mina made it all better. They are very, very different books, but both excellent books all the same. The discussion was thoughtful and interesting and I’m look forward to hearing the programme on Sunday 3 September.

Denise Mina was very kind and I enjoyed meeting her, albeit briefly.
