Started this one during my last few days in France - Hemingway's fictional account based partly on fact, of his time spent in the Italian army during world war 1, as an ambulance driver. This prompted me to actually do some backgroud reading on the first war as I am horrified to say I could not tell you what caused it to start or who was on whose side

Unbelievably it all started due to the assassination of one man, Archduke Franz Ferdindand of Austria on the 28th June 1914 - but I am sure you all knew that
