Xitomatl

Aztec for tomato - they originated in Mexico. I have a slight love affair with this beauty, which is what makes me cross that supermarkets sell such tasteless varieties - bred for uniformity, even colour, resistance to pesticides and ease of mechanical picking. What does flavour have to do with food, after all??

These were bought at a greengrocer in Boldmere (part of Sutton), and look and taste good - good, not superb, like some we bought in a tiny dark shop in the Alpurraras in the south of Spain - that made up into a tomato sauce I still dream about.
