A Meadow Brown Pretending to be a Gatekeeper
With its double eyespot, this meadow brown has ambitions to be a gatekeeper. There are two reasons why this can't be a gatekeeper:
1. Gatekeepers are not found this far north (yet!).
2. There are distinct differences on the underside of the hind (lower) wing.
They both have a light band separated from a darker area by a wavy line.
In the meadow brown, there is nothing in the light band except for sometimes having a couple of small black dots.
The gatekeeper on the other hand has two or three dark splodges in the light area and each one has white spots in the centre.
You can see that clearly in this recent blip by JanePetlyJones.
