Granny Square Day: August 15th

All about Granny Squares:

The word crochet comes from the Middle French word for hook: croche,
and the Old Norse word for a hook: krokr.

The earliest known example of a traditional granny square, designed by a Mrs. Phelps, was published in the April 5, 1885 edition of 'Prairie Farmer.'

Prarie Farmer is a weekly newspaper which covers agricultural and rural news in the state of Illinois, USA.

I believe these crocheted items are called 'Granny Squares' because many years' ago,  thrifty grannies used up yarn oddments to crochet these squares, join them together and make blankets or other items. These days, granny squares have become immensely popular for making very trendy clothes!
