Droog and I have had a wonderful day. Our friend Veronica and her husband took us to the site of a WWII auxiliary unit operating base in woods near where they live In Lincolnshire. The auxiliary units were small teams of men trained to go to ground in case of an invasion; they would then form the basis of local resistance. Their life expectancy was only 14 days at best. They were frequently men who were in reserved occupations and had a reason to be travelling around the countryside - farmers, doctors, postmen, etc. Veronica’s father, a farmer, was one of them in this operating base. We felt privileged to see where these brave men had been. Thank goodness we weren’t invaded and they weren’t required to fight.
