HMS Belfast
HMS Belfast is a museum ship, originally a Royal Navy light cruiser, permanently moored in London on the River Thames.
Some career highlights:
1938: Built by Harland and Wolff as a 6 inch cruiser designed for the protection of trade and offensive action
1939: Formed part of the 18th Cruiser Squadron based in Scapa Flow. Captured a German Liner SS CAP NORTE disguised as a Swedish Liner SS ANACONA
1939: severely damaged by a German magnetic mine and had to be almost entirely rebuilt
1943: On Russian convoy duties and played a major role in the Battle of North Cape
1944: Participated in the bombardment supporting the D-Day landings
1945: sailed for the Far East - carried Japanese prison camp survivors from Shanghai to Hong Kong
1948: re-commissioned and sailed for the Far East where she became the Flagship of the 5th Cruiser Squadron
1950-1952: Took part in the Korean War
