Newark Castle
There is a lot of scaffolding at Newark Castle, so the only angle from which I could take a picture which did not include scaffolding was the the best at the moment, but would not be the best angle once the scaffolding is down.
On our arrival the custodian gave us a lengthy but interesting introduction to the castle, including explaining the nature of the works being undertaken. The roof is the original built in 1590 and work is being undertaken to repair and strengthen the roof. A man with a helmet and computer was going around the scaffolding taking photographs.
The castle has commanding views over the Clyde.. The owner in the 1590s was apparently a highly intelligent man, in many respects ahead of his time. He was also a murderer and wife beater, but being a friend of the King was able to get away with such diversions from more civilised behaviour.
We climbed the tower and inspected the interior of the house which built when it no longer needed to be fortified. Lots of dark spiral staircases in the older parts of the castle.
These exertions had to be followed by lunch overlooking the river in a cafe in Gouroch and watching the sailing boats go by. The weather was quite Mediterranean and the view almost so.
