Castro Urdiales
We drove to Castro Urdiales this morning and as you can see from my main blip the wild Atlantic weather continues to roll in. Sunshine and showers best describes it, with more showers than sunshine! It's a modern town whose main industries are tourism, fishing and oil-packing of fish, particularly sardines and anchovies.
High on the cliffs above the town is its castle and Gothic-style church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion dating from the Middle Ages. We walked up to see the church (in extras) where some stone masons were carrying out necessary repairs to the stonework which has been battered by the weather over the centuries. We also saw quite a few 'pilgrims' who were obviously on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route sitting for a few quiet moments inside while the rain lashed down and getting their Camino passports stamped. This allows them to stay in some of the hostels along the way and also proves they've stayed the course.
