More exploration
While Carl took a boat trip, I wandered around part of Tavira that we hadn’t ventured into before, staying on the side of the river where the boat left and continuing past the “Roman” bridge into a new-to-us area (yesterday’s Tuk driver told us the Roman bit is made up, and is really just shorthand to distinguish it from the pedestrian bridge and the other ones).
The river was at the highest we’ve seen during our stay and that made the experience all the nicer. I really enjoyed the time here and spotted a restaurant on the far bank which looked like a nice place for our evening meal. Sure enough, we ended up there (it was okay, but not great). On our way back to the hotel after eating we stopped off at a little place on a narrow street we hadn’t been on before and had our first proper taste of Amarguinha, a Portuguese almond liqueur that’s served with lemon juice and ice. We tried one in the hotel the previous night but they omitted the lemon juice, which rather spoiled the experience. What we had tonight was terrific.
