Life through the lens...

A bridge too far.

Actually two bridges and not that far.
Photo taken from the car as we stopped at traffic lights after collecting our order from Sainsbury’s in Halifax.

The ornate Victorian Gothic styled lower bridge - North Bridge - was built in 1871, and crosses the River Hebble in Halifax.
Above you can see the concrete Burdock Way by- pass. Built in 1973.

Earliest record of a wooden bridge 1277.
A stone bridge recorded in 1719. This bridge collapsed on “ Rogation Day” in April 1770 during a “ beating the bounds” ceremony, causing many injuries.
Work on a new bridge then started in 1772. A long six- arched bridge which opened in 1774.
Part of this bridge collapsed because of flooding in July 1855. It was dismantled in 1870 to make way for the new Victorian bridge you can see today.

Note on today’s weather. WET ! 14C.

I have tagged this for Wide Wednesday. Challenge Man made.

( Beating the bounds is a centuries-old tradition, aimed at reminding everyone of boundaries that were important in their lives. During Rogationtide - the 5th week after Easter- villagers with the rector and other local dignitaries, would walk the parish bounds.)
