Sailing

More meeples being eaten again tonight, but this time it really is a vintage game - the original 1986 edition of Escape from Atlantis.  A variant of this has been subsequently released as Survive!

The premise here is that Atlantis is sinking (a piece of the island comes off each turn) and you need to get your meeples to the safety of coral reefs - avoiding the assorted sea monsters, sharks and octo-pi/podes/puses.

It's an entertainingly mean game given that the obvious strategy is to get your opponents eaten.  I got well and truly munched, but a good time was had by all.

Octopus - originally a Greek word (thus, -podes for the plural), it arrived in English (thus, -puses) after a long stay in Latin (thus, -pi).  It would seem this debate has been ticking over since at least the 19th century.
