Inspired by an elegant stone pillar.

It marks the edge of Saint Mary’s churchyard and the entrance to a public footpath. Something at it’s base has caught my eye. Is it a stone, or cast concrete? I know the initials GPO stand for General Post Office but what does the arrow indicate? Does it mark the route of a telephone cable? It’s not the only one I have seen. Someone must know the answer.
