Back to the usual
Catching up with everything after coming home from holiday. Spent quite bit of time in the garden and after lunch popped down to the Glencruitten Walled Garden to see how my peas and runner beans were doing. Not well, is the answer!
A few runners have reached the top of the poles and from one I picked three beans! The rest are struggling, dried up, nibbled by slugs or chewed off by rabbits! I'm glad I potted some more and sat them out on the deck at home - the first of the three tubs has dozens of beans, almost ready for eating.
The peas were even worse - in spite of giving everything a good soaking before going away they mostly looked shrivelled and miserable, barely six inches high. This is the first year they've been so unsuccessful, but it won't be long before we lose the garden anyway. The new owner of Glencruitten House has apparently taken up his legal right to offer for other parts of the estate - I wasn't aware of this. He'll be buying the Walled Garden and Hope Kitchen/Green Shoots will have be out by September 2024, it seems. Hard to believe it's happening after all the effort and expense which has gone into it. I don't know how a new site can be found for this community project.
