From Ypres to Belle-et-Houllefort

We drove unnoticed from the Belgian to the French. Like we had to switch linguistically between the French 'bonjour' and the Dutch 'hello' all along. I had already gone on strike to find out what language everyone spoke and had already decided to speak English from now on.

In the café of the photo of the day I had a funny conversation about Sint Maarten. According to the owner, it was a Capuchin monk from Dunkirk who had lost his donkey. The donkey was sought and found in the dunes by means of the donkey's poop. The donkey dung was collected and found as bread the next day. See there; a miracle. According to the narrator, it was a Dunkirk tradition to celebrate Saint Martin's Day.
I told about the Groningen Sint Maarten tradition of singing and getting lanterns and sweets and the lantern parade in Maastricht where upon she showed pictures of the annual torchlight procession in Dunkirk. This is funny and I'll have to look up more on that later.
