Kirkham Priory.
Not how we had planned today, but madethe most of a very wet day.
We had a picnic lunch sat sat in the car, before I had a walk round the Priory grounds. Then over the bridge to see the signal box and a very short walk along the river.
The ruins of Kirkham Priory are alongside the River Derwent, near Malton.
The Augustinian Priory was founded in 1120s by Walter l’Espec, Lord of nearby Helmsley.
The Priory was then surrendered in 8 Dec. 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The area was later used to test the D- Day landing vehicles and was visited by Winston Churchill.
Now looked after by English Heritage.
The station was opened in 1845 on the York to Scarborough Line. It closed in 1930 but the signal box is still in use to man the level crossing. A grade 11 listed building. See Blue plaque in collage.
We are now checked in to The Mount Hotel in Malton, where tonight we are going to the Milton Rooms to see Clare Teal. The performance is part of the Rydale Festival.
We have see Clare on a couple of occasions and are very much looking forward to tonight’s performance.
Glad it is inside as it is still raining!
