In the 16th century a monk in South America decided that as most of the local people couldn’t read and write, he would us to use the local Passion Flowers to symbolise the last hours of Christ in the Easter story. The corona represents the crown of thorns, the styles represent the nails used in the Crucifixion, the stamens represent the five wounds, and the five sepals and five petals represent ten of the disciples. The missing two are Judas who betrayed Jesus, and Peter who denied Jesus three times on the night of his trial.
