Slime
On this morning's walk with the spaniel I came across the trunk of a fallen beech tree with an extensive covering of slime mould. From a distance it was just a yellow and white stain on the wood but seen up close it is, I think, astonishingly complex and beautiful. I suspect it is probably one of the Ceratiomyxa genus, possibly a coral or honeycomb slime mould.
Update: I am told by someone who knows about these things that it is Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa var. poroides and that it is a rare find.
