Norfolk cereal field

They grow lots of things in Norfolk. Unfortunately they want exclusivity, so, if growing wheat is the intention there is no room for any poppies or cornflowers or anything other than wheat. I think someone described this, very unpoetically, as a monoculture desert.
I saw this recently when walking through a field of oil seed rape. The plants have to die and dry before the seeds can be collected. Obviously in the early stages, when the crop flowered, it supported loads of insects and other animals, but not now. Even though the stems were bare and spindly, letting light through to the ground, there was no of other plants growing in the field. Without plant life there are no animals living in the field.  No plants, no animals, sounds like a desert.
We need farmers to grow food for us to eat, its just a shame that the way this is currently done has such a negative effect on the ecosystem
