Tennessee Vacation ...
… day 3.
One of the biggest reasons I chose Tennessee for our vacation destination is because I have wanted to visit Franklin, TN since reading a novel about the battle of Franklin during the Civil War. The novel is a fictionalized story based on an actual woman who lived in Franklin during the battle. Her house was used as a field hospital and then in the years following the war she and her husband created a National Confederate Cemetery on their property.
Franklin is about three hours from our resort so will be staying overnight in Franklin tonight. There is just too much to do here to make the trip down and back in one day.
As we have reservations to tour Carnton House tomorrow today was spent touring a couple of the other historic homes in and around Franklin.
The most memorable is the one featured in my collage … The Carter House. The battle raged right outside this house and the white building in the lower right has the bullet holes to prove it. The top picture was taken inside the building so you can really appreciate the bullet holes. We toured the house with Thomas as our guide. We were only ones on the tour so it was a very intimate tour … having Thomas all to ourselves. We went all though the house with him telling us all the history. But the most memorable part of the tour was the basement. This is where the family and staff hunkered down during the heat of the battle. They had set up chairs around the perimeter of the room with the names of the family, friends and servants (and their ages) on each chair. It was very heart wrenching and left a tear in my eyes.
For supper we took Thomas’s advice and went to a local fried chicken restaurant that was very good. After supper we checked into our hotel before visiting a local park … The Park at Harlinsdale Farm … to enjoy some fresh air. The Extra of a lovely great blue heron was taken here.
Backblipped: July 18, 2023 … why do I always have to backblip my vacations!?!
