SS Great Britain

Over 170 years old, this remarkable ship has sailed over a million miles - as a cruise liner, an emigrants’ vessel, and latterly a cargo ship.

She was built right here in Bristol, scuttled and then salvaged in the Falkland Islands, and brought home to her original dry dock in 1970.

When I first saw her she was still largely a shell but the subsequent restoration work and creation of an immersive museum tells her epic story, and that of her designer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, as well as showing us in fabulous detail what she was like below decks in her glory days. Amazing!
