Day 197/23. Remember Swampy?

This is the M3 as it passes northbound through Twyford Cutting. In the foreground is the old Hockley Railway viaduct (now a footpath).
The Twyford Cutting was a source of great consternation before construction, with public enquiries and an extended protest. Including, as I recall, a character called 'Swampy' living in a tree in the centre of the planned path and refusing to move. The protests turned ugly and several were arrested.
The M3 was finally opened through the chalk cutting in 1995. Now, you can hardly see the white chalk of the South Downs National Park through which it cut. Nature is taking it back.
