Regatta

Rather wiped out after our adventures yesterday, we relaxed this morning, before taking the bus to Miðvágur. A had found out that it was hosting a regatta using heavy wooden boats similar to the ones that she rows in Portobello. The main difference is that in the Faroes they are a little wider, allowing two rowers side-by-side on the same seat. It wasn't on the open sea, but the 950m of fjord after the breakwater. This was wide enough for one race to have 12 boats in it. We saw the end of the junior racing, and all of the senior races. There were some close races, and we could follow a lot of the action on a big screen. The different colours of the boats and crew outfits added to the occasion, and it was also interesting to observe it as a social event. 

The final race was between three men's 10-oared (biggest) boats. The winners were from Klaksvik, and they carried their boat and cox aloft in triumph (see extra). The rain just about held off, but we were glad of a hot chocolate at the service station before taking the bus back to Tórshavn.
