What is it?

I planted what I thought were some onion seeds.  However as they grew they were obviously not onions so I thought I must have picked up the wrong packet and they were in fact turnips.  Having pulled this one up today I am not sure what it is - any ideas?  I am not sure whether it is in fact edible!
