Flash of the blindingly obvious
The shock seemed to have done something to my hearing; Lewis's voice seemed to be coming from a long way away, faint but with a booming echo.
He was talking into the telephone. Like some pampered hotel guest, reporting that he'd accidentally spilt something, he was explaining that he now needed the mess to be cleared up. His high-handed manner, and his attitude of complete and utter entitlement, were breathtaking.
His indifference to myself and Jen was equally breathtaking.
He was certain - whether through experience or intuition - that shock and fear would freeze us into inaction. Quite simply, we weren't worth worrying about. He had the knife, he had the arrogant commanding voice, he had all the advantages.
And then it suddenly hit me: he didn't.
