Broughty Castle was built in 1490 and occupies a strategic position guarding the point where the Firth of Tay is at its narrowest.  Over the years it was besieged by the English and eventually becoming ruinous until it was bought by the War Office in 1851 and with the threat of French invasion it was refurbished and extended with a new wing as well as new courtyard walls and artillery emplacements.  Further alterations were made during the two world wars and it remained in military use until 1949.  Now it houses a museum with displays on the life and times of Broughty Ferry, its people, the local environment and the wildlife.
Extra  It appears that the lower part of the drawbridge chain is missing but I was interested in the drawbridge pulley mechanism beside the door.
The lines of the castle fit in with today’s Widwed “straight” challenge.
