Mauerspringer (Wall Jumper)

This iconic representation from a divided Berlin is very near to where we have been staying, on Bernauer Strasse.
Conrad Schumann, a young soldier, was sent to guard the three day old wall which was then only a barbed wire fence. Following encouragement from West Berliners he jumped the fence and escaped to the west.
