Sunday Meandering

A cooler morning with a light breeze brought some relief after a warm night. Merlin and I sat in the garden listening to sky larks and watching the yachts sail by in the distance. A very pleasant way to enjoy an early morning cup of tea. The grasses in the ‘wild’ areas of the garden are filled with insects including moths, butterflies and damselflies but I am not particularly good at identifying most of what I see.

After waiting for some rain to pass we took the local footpath along ‘sea wall’ - a mud bank originating from the 1500s built to keep the sea at bay. The bank runs through a nature reserve and past interesting historical features, including an abandoned jetty built in 1904 from which there were hopes of a local tourism industry establishing, and the remains of oyster beds.

This evening the sun has appeared and we’ve had a pleasant walk through the local town to the marina which includes these sail lofts, along with a mix of light industry supporting the sail boat community, cafes and a sailing club.

An interesting place to stay. We are enjoying discovering the local history and seeing the majestic Thames barges with their huge red sails travelling up and down the river.
