A morning with swifts
There's a dedicated swift rescuer in Sheffield - Chet Cunago, part of the wider network that aims to promote the cause of swift conservation.
Every year people bring her grounded swifts, as word gradually spreads that they need specialist rehabilitation. Trying to throw a grounded swift up the air, and hoping that it will fly, never works - despite having been a commonly-held belief for years.
Anyway, last year I took some photos of Chet feeding her charges, and this year I asked if I could go back for another session. The swift conservation network has used a few of my 2022 images for PR, and I was keen to give them a better selection. Apart from that, it's just a rare treat to see these extraordinary birds close-up.
Chet spent the winter reading up and reflecting on her rehab experience so far. That's led to making some changes in her feeding approach, aiming to mimic more closely the ways that parent birds and chick interact in the nest. It was fascinating to hear about all this.
So - a couple of preliminary edits from the inevitable large set. I'm hoping that this time I'll be able to send her some good sets, reflecting the whole feeding sequence.
Later I picked Eben up, as it's been another teachers' strike day. We'd arranged for him to stay over - something we all enjoy, and that we haven't done for some time.
