To London - 39 miles

From the wild forest heart,
To the pulse of city streets.
Is thirty-nine miles.

Myself and a friend took Mrs Woo for a walk on the Ashdown Forest. It was such a lovely day, the sky was blue, the gorse in full flower - beautiful (see alternative blip below). After our exertions we retired to Duddleswell Tea Room for a drink and a scone/toasted tea cake. Coming out we noticed this old road sign.

It seems odd to be in the heart of the countryside and yet be only 39 miles from London..... I imagine that when this sign was put there that 39 miles would've taken a lot longer than it does nowadays .... although perhaps not ...
