Hardanger

Because I really need another new craft... (heavy sarcasm)

This is a form of embroidery called hardanger. You do most of the stitching before VERY carefully cutting the holes, trying not to cut the stitches you have just put in. Then you add embellishments with a finer thread. 

The effect is beautiful - complicated but geometric, which is just my aesthetic - and the stitching side of it grows surprisingly quickly. 

Now I'm eyeing up tablecloths and handkerchiefs to see what can fall prey to my needle...
