Nails from the Ghan
Our friend Arthur made these coat and hat pegs for us. He had collected the nails from the old Ghan railway track and stored them in his inexhaustible workshop.
The Ghan railway was commenced in 1878 to transport goods between Adelaide, Alice Springs and Darwin, a distance of 2979kms.. The name comes from the Afghan cameleers who played a such a significant role in opening up the interior of Australia. The line was completed as far as Alice Springs in 1929. From there to Darwin it was still transport by camel. The link to Darwin was completed in 2004, by which time the Ghan had become principally a tourist experience.
