Khor Virap

The monastery sits on the plain of Ararat very close to the border with Turkey. The border is the grey boundary in the upper half of the image running down and to the right. St Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in an underground dungeon for 13 years on this site. He is credited with converting Armenia to Christianity in 301 AD, making Armenia the first state to adopt the new religion.
