Life in a Northern Town

Huddersfield A - Z - Marsden Tunnel End

Marsden is a typical Colne Valley village, the last outpost of West Yorkshire before it turns into Greater Manchester across the Standedge moorland escarpment.

It is the point at which the railway line and the Huddersfield Narrow canal disappear under the Pennines through 4 parallel tunnels, 3 for the trains and one for the canal. The canal tunnel is the highest, longest (3.25 miles) and deepest canal tunnel in Britain. It is over 200 years old, and in the absence of a tow path (the horses were walked over the hills), boats had to be "legged" through. It was disused for over 50 years until re-opened in 2001, and now there is a visitors' centre and you can take a boat either part-way into the tunnel or all the way through at certain times of year.

We had a fab walk there with the dog and all had delicious bacon sandwiches.

On the subject of the mutt, after a bad day yesterday, today she is in the running for dog of the year - here she is stretching her legs in the garden (which is now almost fenced!).

The A-Z is half done - whooah we're halfway there......now that's an excuse for a cheesy, Friday, 80s, poodle haired song if ever I heard one. With apologies to anybody who was under the misguided impression I have good taste in music!
