Although Speckled Wood butterflies are common in England they were first recorded only 12 or 13 years ago in the Lothians and are now rapidly colonising the area.    They prefer woodland and shaded places and are the only species seen in dappled shade or in overcast conditions as it was today.   There are a number of subspecies with those in the north having white spots, while those further south have orange spots and apparently the butterflies live for only a week.
