We had a wonderful evening at the book festival - Douglas Stuart fascinating and Halifax Hot Jazz Club wonderful.  We stayed overnight in a hotel in Melrose which was pretty awful - no loo paper, hopeless shower (just as well because there was no mat in the bath), no plates for breakfasy cereal, cracked glasses for juice, stewed breakfast tea from an urn and so on.....  The reception is clearly aware of the poor quality of service as there was no-one around to hear our complaints as we departed ....
