Fig flowers
Fig trees have no visible flowers but a fig is really the flower, the stem of an infloresence, very enlarged and fleshy, that surrounds the tiny flowers inside. And they taste delicious. At the moment the fig trees are just popping and full of new growth. Along with the tiniest of buds and small developing figs there are also large juicy ones ready to pick, often on the same stem.
Today we spent clearing the mass of tall grasses and weeds which surround the fig trees as having a good clearing to walk around is helpful once harvesting begins. In spite of the heat, I need to wear long sleeves when doing this task. I find the big leaves have a hairy feel which makes me itch, as does the white sap which can ooze out of the stems.
Hope you're having a happy weekend so far and keeping cool.
