Mourning Dove

The Mourning Dove is so named for the soft cooing sounds it makes which to some resembles a lament. The Mourning Dove is the most abundant and hunted game bird in North America. We have a small flock of 4-5 that visits our seed tray feeder daily. Yesterday we found a pile of Dove feathers by the pond, reminding us that these plump birds are also popular with both four-footed and winged hunters as well. According to The Cornell Lab's 'All About Birds'; the oldest known Mourning Dove was a 30 year, 4 month old male. He had been banded in Georgia in 1968 and shot in Florida in 1998.
