Orchid

I took a trip out to Bassetts Mead Country Park for a walk, hoping to see damselflies, orchids and butterflies.  It was rather warm and muggy and I only saw a few damselflies (but not captured), a handful of butterflies (mostly on the wing flitting around at speed) and no sign of any orchids.

But then, on the way back to the car, there was a large clump of them standing proud on the water meadows. I've identified them as heath spotted orchids as their lower lip is three-lobed with the side lobes tending to be rounded, and a smaller triangular central lobe, unlike their close relative the common spotted orchid with its longer central lobe and more extensive spotting ... but I'm willing to be corrected!

Update: a knowledgeable friend identified these a common spotted orchids … just shows you shouldn’t trust the internet!
