1963: Buddhist monk immolates himself in protest
Quote Of The Day
"Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect Buddhism."
(Thich Quang Duc)
Mrs. Esper and I had a cinema date to see The Little Mermaid. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. Whereas I was very disappointed with the C.G. remake of The Lion King, I thought that this version of The Little Mermaid was even better than the original classic. Just as with the remake of The Lion King, the C.G. versions of creatures like Sebastian and Flounder were unexpressive and just a little creepy but, unlike The Lion King in which these kinds of creatures made up the entire cast, they were just two of many human (or humanlike) characters so it wasn't so big a problem. Scuttle worked pretty well, in comparison.
Anyway, C.G. creatures aside, everything else worked brilliantly. Top-notch performances from the entire cast, especially Halle Bailey as Ariel and Javier Bardem as King Triton. Where this version scored massively over the original was the realisation of the undersea kingdom; there was so much more depth and detail than in the animated version. The magic of Disney to the max.
When we returned home, Mini Esper The First was wearing the perfect T-shirt for today's blip.
Tissues at the ready.
