How times have changed
I'm not sure if this is the actual car that won the first Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race in 1923 but it is certainly the same model. It was on display at the British Welcome (hence the Union Jack) that is held every year in the village of Saint-Saturnin, on the outskirts of Le Mans. Its a magnet for sports car enthusiasts and a make of sports car is particularly featured each year - this year it was Ferrari. The Ferrari Spider was therefore admitted to the "show" area, as was the Lotus Elise. I had to make do with the temporary car park in a nearby field in my Astra. The extra photo is of Steve McQueen who raced at Le Mans and is something of a cult figure here for that, quite apart from his film career. Next to Steve McQueen is the pop star, Jonny Halliday, very big in France but largely unknown elsewhere.
