Rust-coloured

Had to go out to sort out some things this morning so we went for a walk around Wortham Ling on the way back. The Ling is an area of sandy heathland almost on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. The sand shows through on the many paths and rabbit excavations but the open landscape of the heath is dominated by the rust-coloured sheep's sorrel at this time of the year. The oak featured here looks healthy enough but others were showing the effects of defoliating caterpillars - & probably the more long-term effect of last summer's drought. Even the gorse & brambles on the margins appear to have suffered from the drought & haven't fully recovered. Anyway, it was a pleasant walk, albeit with a cold wind. I didn't think to take gloves - it's supposed to be June!!
