Fingers crossed
On 16th April this year I attempted to use pollen from wild pear trees down by the river to pollinate our conference pear tree as, although it shouldn't need a companion pollinator, it hasn't produced any fruit over the last 2 years. https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/3094364974034717795
It produced in abundance in its first year but it came to us already laden with blossom which we suspect may have been pollinated by companion trees in the garden centre it came from.
Well it's looking very positive at the moment. It's covered in dozens of little pears which hopefully won't fall victim to 'June drop'. Of course this means I will never know if the wild pear blossom did the trick. If there had been no fruit then it would be proof that it hadn't worked whereas these little fruits may have been due anyway. Still I shall trundle off to the river for my pollen supply each year now, even if I am just applying a placebo.
