All that remains

After an incursion it is common for certain curious items – often single shoes, as here – to be found in the area bordering the locus of the incident. A matching pair of shoes has never been observed and theorists speculate that a pair would not be possible without violation of certain recondite conservation laws. It is also never the case that any of the items belonged to any of those consumed during the incursion: the items are rather generated or, some believe, transported here from some hidden, dark, dimension.

The incursion of which this is a residue was fairly minor: only about 30 individuals were consumed.
