Coronation Mug

This is the mug I bought when visiting the market in Wirksworth - not the recent coronation of King Charles III but the one that never happened, Edward VIII.

Obviously, when Edward succeeded to the throne, designers and manufactures got busy producing the commemorative souvenirs so were caught unawares when Edward abdicated and his younger brother, on the day allocated, was crowned George VI. That date appears on this piece three times - below the Coat of Arms on the 'front' and 'back' and also on the base (see extra photos) but not where the venue is written. The name Edward VIII appears on the rim and on the base, so there is no mistaking the intended occasion.

The manufacturer, Paragon, was (and is) a well-known producer of bone china, in fact a hand-written history came with the mug, much as the link indicates and this would have been one of the better quality  souvenirs. A sad fact for me is that I did not manage to obtain a similar mug for Charles III as I didn't accept the quality of those I saw and have not seen anything else!
